Sophistication, Style and Sex Appeal....

Rain, Fine Silver Earrings

I'm sure many of you have seen the work of husband and wife team @ FinchBird on etsy, but if you haven't it's certainly worth a visit. Ben obtained an Honours degree in Object Design from Sydney University, and is now a teacher of Design and Visual Art. Dani is the promotional brains of the outfit, and is also involved in design and creation of some of the pieces.

Aubergine- Black Freshwater Pearl Necklace

FinchBird creations are stunning in their simplicity and, in the words of the artists themselves, are 'inspired by nature, clean organic shapes, leaves and new growth'.

I love the whole range from Dani and Ben, which is rather rare :) There are a couple of pieces I find particularly amazing though, the Moebius pendant and Snowdrop earrings (pictured below).

Snowdrop- Fine Silver Earrings

Another thing from the store that I absolutely must share with you (although I must confess I've featured this before) is the Tendril/Rocket/Jet Stream series that cause a bit of a stir (and reaching for purses) amongst the DUST team members.

Jet Stream

Perfect for the 'recessonista', these sterling silver earrings are a very affordable luxury, and are 'the little black dress' in earring form (my sister-in-law is already trying to pinch mine!).

News from the Leeloo blog- Salon Sessions

I thought this might be of interest to all those based in Sydney (copied with permission from the Leeloo Dog Blog). Sounds interesting!

Angela from Leeloo.com.au in conjunction with Hollie, founder of Online Divas and PR specialist extraordinaire, will be holding a Salon Session.

What’s a Salon Session I hear you ask? It’s essentially a tutorial / workshop with a relaxed vibe. Sizes and spaces are limited so as to ensure group conversation and discussion on the topic, usually over coffee and nibbles.

This particular Salon Session will be held in Sydney (at Online Divas HQ in Surry Hills), at 6pm on Wednesday June 24th, and looks at the various ways that independent designers and artists can take advantage of tools available on the web to get your product out to the public, as well as how to best get noticed by retailers, such as Leeloo.

This includes information like photography sites, social networking, setting up your own mini-store and other tools you can use to your advantage, most of which are free. Yes, we’ll even discuss how to use Twitter.

If you’re interested in coming along, tickets are only $25 (available here), which is an absolute bargain price for gaining valuable knowledge and gathering worthwhile information, whilst meeting like-minded individuals and making connections with the community, both locally and online. It would be lovely to see you there and meet some of our crafty followers!

Interview with an Etsy Expert: The House Of Mouse

I recently included an article written by Anna from The House of Mouse with some excellent advice on tagging in the Etsy Tips and Tricks series, and she very kindly agreed to do an interview and share some of her etsy tips with us. Anna has over 670 sales and a successful full-time mouse-making business, so it's definitely worth taking some notes!

How and why did you start selling on Etsy, and where did the mousey inspiration come from?

The first mice that I made were Christmas presents for my family and friends back in November 2007. My grandmother owned a small shop in a tourist village called Mousehole in the UK, she made small felt mice in costumes to sell in her shop, along with a lot of other mousy themed pieces like mugs, plates and ashtrays. She and my grandfather passed away when I was only 3, so I don't have any memory of her. But my parents still have some of her mice at home, they peek out from corners and shelves all through the house.

I have always enjoyed making things and most Christmases I give my family handmade gifts. My mice are quite different from my Grandmothers ones; they are slightly larger and their shape is different, but the idea of dressing them in costumes is the same. My family and friends were so happy with their mice, and many of them said I should sell them, I can hardly believe how well they have been doing.

I knew about Etsy from an artist website community called www.deviantart.com , I had been posting my paintings (www.annagreaves.deviantart.com) there for a long time and had come across several etsy sellers shops through their deviantart galleries. So I was already aware of etsy before I started sewing my mice.

Maria The Ballerina Mouse

Do you have a favourite mouse? Do you ever get any bizarre custom requests?

Choosing a favourite mouse is always hard for me, because they feel like my children. I really do love every one of them. I have a special place in my heart for my angel mouse, because her wings were so hard to figure out how to make, and I am pleased with the solution I came up with. I love Naomi and Milo the mom and baby mouse, little Milo's huge eyes just hit the awwww factor for me every time. I also adore my Dangerous mice, especially Axel the executioner mouse with the little severed mouse head. Some people say I am sick when they see him, but there is something about the cuteness and macabre together that make me laugh.

I get custom requests all the time, most of them are normal, while a few of them have been a bit strange. One customer asked for a walrus-mouse, which was very tricky to do. What parts of the mouse did I need to keep to make it recognisably a mouse? And which bits did I need to also make him a walrus? He was a representation of an in-joke between siblings. In the end I rather liked the moulrus, as he came to be known.

Edward Scissorpaws Mouse

Can you tell us a bit about the creative process involved in making a mouse?

I have a HUGE list of ideas for mice that I want to make, I keep them in a little book. I also have a page on my blog for people to make suggestions. I literally have hundreds of mice that I want to make. Ideas for a mouse hit me all the time, while watching a movie, reading a book or flicking through channels on the TV etc. I get great suggestions from fans all the time. I don't think I will ever run out of ideas.

I try to make a new mouse every week, so on a Friday I look through all my ideas and pick a new mouse to make. I use google to find out everything I can about my chosen mouse and pick the characteristics that he or she should have to make them recognisable.

I sew up a basic mouse body, with feet, tail, nose, ears and eyes already on and then I start work on clothing him. I have a wall of ribbon that I use for the mouse clothing, so I pick out colours and fabrics to use. sometimes I don't have the right thing so a trip the supply store is needed (my favourite kind of shopping!)

If the mouse needs a tricky accessory then I spend some time deciding the best way to make it, sometimes I can do it with card or felt, rubber foam or a drinking straw. occasionally they require me to mould an accessory using polymer clay. The finishing touch is when I put their whiskers in.

You have turned your store into a highly successful business. What advice would you give to new and not-so-new etsy sellers?

There is so much to learn on Etsy. I guess my biggest piece of advice to sellers here is to read all the material available on setting up and running your store. It amazes me how few people are aware of the storque and it's almost unlimited resources to help you improve your store and get the sales you want.

When I wanted to open my store, my bank messed up my credit card application and it took them 4 months to get it to me - it was annoying at the time, but really it was a blessing - because I spent all that time reading everything I could find on taking great photos, writing store policies, customer service and loads of other things.

When my credit card finally arrived (this was back when you to get a store on Etsy you had to register a credit card with them, you can pay your bill with paypal now) I was more than ready to open my store. It got me off on a great start.

This blog post has links to some of the best resources I found for new and struggling sellers.

I regularly blog advice for sellers, you can find links to all my posts here.

Harry Potter Mouse

Is there any particular advice you have for international sellers?

Being a seller from outside the USA can be daunting here, the best way to feel part of the community is to join a team that is based in your country, you can find the whole list of Etsy teams here. The European Street Team has been wonderful for me, they gave me the advice and support I needed when I first arrived. Having friends on Etsy who can help you with problems specific to the country you are in (shipping issues for example) is really valuable. I am sure that if it was not for the EST I would have had a much harder time getting to grips with this site.

Yoda Mouse

What kind of promotion do you do? Do you promote much off Etsy, and do you have any insight into reaching new buyers (non-sellers) that you'd like to share?

I have tried a lot of different promotions. When I first started on Etsy most of my promotions were within the site. I joined a team that makes treasuries featuring their members and that resulted on my mice getting on the front page quite regularly. I also made a lot of treasuries, although I have less time to sit and wait for one to open now.

After about a year on Etsy I started to focus my marketing away from Etsy. My main places to promote are:

1) My blog http://lifecraftinessandeverythingelse.blogspot.com I blog almost every day to keep readers coming back. I also run a monthly giveaway there, which is proving to be very popular, and it helps more people from outside etsy aware of my shop.

2) I have a facebook fan page which I keep updated all the time with new mice and updates from my blog.

3) I also use twitter to expand my fan base and keep people up to date with what I am making. I can promote my giveaways, blog posts and other news through twitter too.

Both Twitter and Facebook are great free ways to promote because you can target your posts at the people most likely to be interested in what you are doing. They are also highly viral sites, in that when people comment on your posts their friends see your work. Both sites provide a linking and networking base that helps word spread about your shop very fast with a minimum amount of effort on your part.

I use flikr, myspace, deviantart and some ning networks as well to promote any new mice that I make. Setting all these things up takes time, but once they are done you don't need to spend more than 3 hours a week on promotions. (I spend about 6 because I blog about tutorials, which take time to write, and I have a second blog just for fun http://fortheloveofcute.blogspot.com)

I have stores on dawanda.com and Artfire.com , although neither site is as buyer-friendly as Etsy so my success of those sites have been minimal.

Naomi and Milo Junior- Mother and Baby Mouse

What is the next step in the 'Anna and her mice take over the world' story?

I am currently stocking up my Star Wars mice for an exhibition in Florida in July. The show is called Stitch Wars, an exhibition of handmade Star Wars Themed art - which my mice were just born to be a part of!

Once those orders are complete I am going to keep making new designs and working on my promotions. There is lots more for me to learn and improve on. I hope one day to be able to afford to pay someone to share the work load with me, or perhaps outsource the basic mouse shape so that I can produce more. I don't really know how to achieve this yet, I have more research to do. But since I found The House of Mouse I have had the constant feeling that the sky is the limit, I never know what is going to happen next!

PleaseEloise
Unique and Pretty Accessories
Madeline in Moscow- Beautiful Headband

5-Question Mini Interview with Kate of PleaseEloise

How would describe the concept behind your store?
Fun. Funky. Fabulous. Handmade hair accessories for little ladies and little ladies at heart.

How and why did you start selling on etsy?
I have always been a big fan of Etsy, and when my daughter Eloise was born in 2007 with a mop of hair, I started making hair clips to pin it back. Eloise's hair clips (or 'pretties' as she calls them) received compliments from friends and strangers and a business idea grew from there. After many prototypes and lots of trial and error, I opened Please Eloise at Etsy when Eloise was 15 months old. I haven't looked back.

Ruby- Lovely Set of Polka Dot Hairclips

Do you have a favourite item that you almost hope someone won't buy?
I love the Little Red Riding Hood ponytail holders and hair clips. They have been such great sellers that I'm running low on fabric and every time I have another sale I feel a little pang! Mental note... must put some away for Eloise now...

Aimee- Rainbow Alligator Hairclips

What do you do when you're not etsying?
Amusing Eloise, preparing for the August Stitches & Craft Show in Sydney where I'm exhibiting (and trying not to have a coronary in the process), preparing to move house and renovate a little at the end of this month and moonlighting four days a week at my day job as a Workplace Investigator.

Tell us something surprising that we don't know about you...
I'm a dangerous person without my morning coffee and there isn't much that I won't do for some chocolate... and I can't get up in the morning unless there is some kind of holiday plan in the works.

Don't forget to visit Kate's blog for a look 'behind the scenes' http://www.pleaseeloise.blogspot.com

AngelLeaDesigns
Bright, colourful, funky clothing for boys and girls

Singlet with Fish Applique

5-Question Mini Interview with Anthea of AngelLeaDesigns

How would you describe the concept behind your store?
I hope to provide quality unique clothing for kids, with a focus at the moment on boys clothing, as they seem to get left out in the “cute-clothes-that-don’t-have-spiderman-or-some-other-character-on-them department”.

How and why did you start selling on etsy?
As ‘going to work’ is not a viable option for me at the moment, creating and selling on Etsy is something I can do at home around my two kids, and hopefully, in the long term, earn a small income from it. The idea came about because I simply love sewing and clothes, and I thought why not turn my hobby into something more. I’ve never had a job I love, until now!

Boys' Pants with Contrasting Cuff and Pockets

Do you have a favourite item that you almost hope someone won’t buy?
Some of my favourite items have actually been clothes I’ve made for gifts, but I do hope to maybe re-create some of those items for my kids.

Knot Hat/Beanie with Applique Design

What do you do when you’re not etsying?
Attempting to bring up 2 kids and a husband!

Tell us something surprising that we don’t know about you…
Hmm… I have a scar where my second head was removed when I moved from Tasmania to South Australia! (joking)!!

Helicopter Appliqued Long Sleeve T-Shirt

Giveaway From AngelLeaDesigns:
Win a helicopter appliqued long sleeve t-shirt (size 4) similar to the one pictured above, including free international postage.

Featured Etsy Team: The BrisStyle Team!

Joining a street team is a great way to find some help and support on etsy, and to connect with lots of other Australian sellers. Chris from the Brisbane-based BrisStyle team took some time out to chat about the team...

Raincloud Brooch by LittleChrissy

How did the BrisStyle team start and what makes it successful?
In March 2008, 12 likeminded artists met to discuss forming a group with an aim to foster and support the local creative community.
One year later the group has swelled to more than 75 members, who meet regularly to celebrate their shared love of creating beautiful things.
BrisStyle's success lies in the fact the group is a support network for people with a shared interest. It sounds corny but we really are like one big ever-expanding family. We are all about helping boosting members' sales, offering support and advice, and showing the world that you can be crafty and cool.

Reversible Handbag Spearmint Leaves by WheresBeckyBean

The team seems quite active both online and in the real world. Can you tell us about the events and promotions the team regularly runs or is involved in?
First and foremost we have our BrisStyle Indie Designers Market, which is being held at the St Augustine's Church Hall in Hamilton on July 4. This year we're looking to hold our markets four times a year, so there will be lots of BrisStyle cheer to be had.
Our BrisStyle blog http://brisstyle.blogspot.com is a great place to find all of our members in the one spot. We hold monthly member giveaways, and also run profiles on featured members so you can get an insight into their creative processes.
We had very successful participation as a collaborative in this year's Brisbane Stitches & Craft show, which we will continue next year.
We are also building relationships with other major Australian Indie art/craft supporters such as Living Creatively, MixTape and Peppermint magazines, 4zzz and Artworkers Alliance.

Cuddly Cat by EdwardAndLilly

Do you have any advice for new or not-so-new Aussie etsy sellers? Perhaps some thoughts on reaching Australian buyers who have not yet discovered etsy?
Get involved in a team like BrisStyle! We have a swag of seasoned sellers in our group, as well as a lot of newbies who are just starting to explore avenues of getting their wares out there. Our group forums are an excellent way to get advice on any sort of issue. Don't be afraid to speak to new people - put it out there!

Botanical Black Pet Collar by PretaPawte

How can Aussie sellers join the BrisStyle team?
We are a friendly bunch - send us an email at brisstyleteam@gmail.com and we promise to respond promptly with details on how to get involved.
Sundress, Pretty in Pink by HotFudge

Do you think there is a particular 'Brisbane style' or are you just a stylish bunch in general?
Brisbane has long suffered the stigma of being referred to as the backward cousin of its southern sister cities - a tag that is completely unjustified! We have the beautiful weather, a gorgeous river city and open and friendly people, and this is reflected in our relaxed style. Our members' creations are so varied in content, but we are always astounded at how stylish, clever and creative they are.

Don't forget to check out the BrisStyle blog, where you can find out all about the team and win lots of goodies! There's also a new BrisStyle Facebook group, and I'm told that there's a 'spankingly good' website going live very soon...I will certainly be keeping an eye out for that one!
